An absolute classic, the 4711 Brand by German perfume house Maurer & Wirtz is remarkable for its fascinating story. A Carthusian monk made a gift to a newly married couple of the recipe for an "aqua mirabilis," miracle water, in 1792. Originally meant to be ingested as a tonic, the husband so gifted realized the carefully concocted compound had a marvelous, uplifting citrus-based fragrance.
