Edwin Jagger Chatsworth Barley Classic Double-Edge Safety Razor

I'm a fan of Edwin Jagger razors because they provide such an easy, smooth shave. Whether you're a beginner, traveler, or a veteran wet shaver, this Chatsworth Barley is destined to be in your weekly rotation. Just a tad shorter in length than the EJ Bulbous Lined razor, this Chatsworth weighs virtually the same, but the handle's shape, mass, and balance lets you hold it lightly, which aids in drawing fine lines or getting close to your nose, ears, and around the lips. Although the Chatsworth Barley uses the same head as the Bulbous Lined, a Feather blade seemed noticeably more aggressive for some odd reason. I used both Derby and Dorco blades and I received several near perfect shaves.

Beautiful craftsmanship, sleek and smooth, simple yet elegant. The handle is heavy, just the way I like it. I gave it a test drive as soon as it arrived and was not disappointed with anything about it. The razor glided on my skin with ease and was one of, if not the best shaves I have ever experienced. An easy 5 out of 5 stars. Try one, you won't be disappointed.

I bought the Chatsworth Barley razor recently from The English Shaving Company, and it has the newer Edwin Jagger head. This is my first proper DE razor, although I had used a cheap high street brand DE around fifteen years ago. The shave is very pleasant, smooth, and I like the heavy weight of this razor, so no pressure is needed. Not only does it prompt me to take care shaving, but it is now something to enjoy.

The beautiful lines and careful craftsmanship attracted me to buy this razor. It was a real experience to pull this baby out of the box and feel the heft and note the smoothness of finish. I was thinking "this thing can't shave like it looks". I the ever pessimist had no faith. Well, those thoughts just disappeared once the metal touched skin. I had been using a 1960 Gillette super speed which worked well and did the job, but the way the thick head, skinny, small, too light, handle felt was lacking any sense of pleasure during use. When I first placed the EJ against the tip of my side burn and drew downward I noticed exactly where the blade was to start the cut. The sharp shape of the safety bar gives you a tactile cue, (much like the feel of a straight razor) where the blade is. Then when I drew down I immediately felt and heard the blade cutting and could feel the sharp corners of the safety bar on my skin giving feedback on where the blade path was. The feel was different than what I had known. With the substantial weight of the tool I didn't find it necessary to use any pressure except momentarily when going below the jaw line. Another unexpected benefit of this razor is the way the traditional shape of the handle lends itself to gripping the razor at the balance point. I grip it loosely between forefinger and thumb at the narrowest point of the handle. It is almost like they planned it that way! And for the last point, the traction provided by the barley pattern embossing adds some grip. And what about the shave? It does the job in fewer passes without irritation better than anything else I have tried. This is a double edged razor done right.

Crafstmanship of this razor is outstanding. It gives a very close shave and is NOT agressive at all. For those who like the feel of a larger, heavyweight razor you won't find anything better.

This razor is a excellent blend of classic beauty and well thought out balance and performance. It is a three piece type similar to the vintage Gillette \"New\" and Tech or the Merkur Classic. In my opinion, the new Muhle head that is furnished with this razor, is as good as any head of this type ever made and better than most. In the past I have found that the three piece design needed a little \"wiggle and tighten\" to get the blade even and consistently presented. The Muhle head on this razor seems to help the blade \"find it\'s on spot\" pretty consistently. As for the blade, so far I have only used the Gillette 7:00 Sharp Edge (yellow pack). These work so well I will probably just stick with them for a while. Overall, this is an absolutely first rate shaving tool. It is beautiful and is a pleasure to use. I would highly recommend it to anyone who want a luxurious razor.
