This Merkur is my first safety razor apart from the cheap Gillette models you can get at any grocery store. My first shave I instantly found it to be worth every penny. The craftsmanship is top notch, comes apart easily for cleaning and has a great handle length which allows great control. Cannot recommend this enough!

Great razor. Just be careful to close firmly the knob (which I didn't pay attention the first time so after a while I cut myself because the blade became loose and very aggressive). After I did, it became nice and smooth. All my fault and not the razor's.

I love this razor! I had originally purchased the Weishi razor and commented that it was good for a beginner. Now that I have moved up to the Merkur 38C I am experiencing much closer shaves and this razor is better built and much more substantial feeling. I highly recommend.

I've waited a couple of months before reviewing this razor--my first DE safety razor. Initially I was disappointed with the results. I quickly realized however that this was due to my technique and inexperience, and not the razor itself. After a couple of weeks, and a lot of nicks, I was able to get the technique down. It is a very different experience than shaving with a disposable, and requires a little more care and concentration. Placing the blade in the razor makes you a little cautious at first, but once you become more confident and experienced you become more willing to apply the necessary pressure to receive the desired results. I could never go back to a disposable now. The 38C is a beautifully crafted piece of shaving kit with a good deal of weight to it. I've been using the 38C with a Kent shaving brush and different tubed shaving creams (Erasmus, Proraso, Omega, and Cremo) and getting very clean, close shaves. I still receive the odd nick but I figure that's the price one has to pay for this close of a shave. Thanks to Alfred for his advice on this purchase.

Great razor I purchased a weishi at first and was not getting a close shave. I do not think you need to buy a less aggresive razor to start, save the money and jump right into the good stuff. Just take your time and develope a good routine. Enjoy!

Fantastically excellent shave, very close shave and no burn or irritation for me, two passes and I had a baby but shave, the 38c is a real jem. Fit and finish is great.
