great razor, its my first de, so im comparing to mach3. mach 3 doesn't even compete with this thing, its like shaving with a cloud of nothing, so smooth, no tugging at all. would buy another one if mine ever broke, which is doubtful, due to its extremely sturdy construction.

Easy to use, will not clog like stupid disposables. Closes shave I ever experienced. Once you try this it will be impossible to go back to disposables. And the price of blades is much more reasonable.

I bought this razor 4 months back as a wet shaving starter. Being a total noob to wet shaving, I chose this razor due to it being German made as well as nothing but great reviews. This razor is great, not to passive and not to aggressive for my beard, I switch between Merkur and Black Feather razor blades which both do the job wonderfully for coarse beards. Pros: Long handle for added maneuverability is great, easy to use, easy to clean Cons: Honestly can't think of one.

After returning to wet shaving after a 25 year absence I was a little apprehensive about going to the DE safety razor like the one my Dad used. Even when I was wet shaving 25 years ago I was using the Trac II cartridge blades. What a surprise! This razor is very nice in the hand and is a joy to use. I also like the sheer simplicity of it; fail safe. When coupled with Col Conk Lime shave soap and using the three pass shave, it was much, much better than 25 years ago. Old is new again. Funny thing though, I always kept my old Vulfix shaving brush sitting in the medicine cabinet and just didn't have the heart to toss it. Got it at Woodwards and if you remember this store, you’re an older specimen of the species. Well, my old shaving brush is no longer lonely and I’m grateful she was so long-suffering and didn't get lost after 25 years.

One thing about this razor that I haven't seen mentioned in any review: This razor with it's long handle is fantastic if you're a headshaver like myself. People always talk about the tug of cartridge shaving on the face and for me that issue is even more profound for headshavers....especially on the sides of the head as anything more than a couple days growth is downright annoying as all heck to shave off with a Mach 3 or Fusion. Not so with this little gem. I use the 23c fitted with a Feather blade and it glides through my entire shave process. It can be a bit daunting using a safety razor on your melon as the forgiveness factor is lower IMO simply due to the fact that on most areas of the head you're shaving a hard surface for lack of a better description so expect a nick or two if you have some razor bumps and such (quickly controlled with a Clubman Nick Relief stick or roll on) but the sheer comfort of shaving with this vs a cartridge is well worth the effort and the odd bloodletting....LOL!

I've had my Merkur 23c for a few months now and all I can say is that I absolutely love it. I only wish I would have tried a de razor when I first started shaving 30+ years ago. I will never use a trac II razor again. This razor provides a much closer shave. Bought the variety pack of razor blades and have not been disappointed with any yet so far. Haven't tested all of them yet, but the Atra platinums are great and at the sale price for a 100 pack - definitely recommend them.

After a bit of debate, I finally took the DE shaving plunge after a horrendous shave with a disposable I was forced to use after running out of my Mach 3 blades. My experience, thus far, has been very good with the 23C razor. Of course, I can only compare it to the cartridge razors, but I am extremely pleased with the razor itself and the shaves it has provided. The razor itself is a quality device. Fit and finish is top notch and the razor stays firm in hand do to some very nice knurling on the handle. Of course, it takes some practice, but I found DE shaving to be not that difficult and have only nicked myself 2-3 times in total. Just watch some of the youtube vids out there on prep and technique, and then take your time. The result is a far superior shave than any cartridge ever provided, and the wear and tear on my skin is dramatically reduced. A quick mention on the blades. I purchased the sampler pack and have had the chance to try many of the blades. I found the Merkur blade that came with the razor to be very good, but I have come to enjoy the Feather and Astra Platinum blades just slightly more. The Derby blades, however, were terrible and left my skin raw and red afterwards. I tried a number of these blades, along with different soaps and preps, and the results were always disappointing. Dumped my last Derby blade this morning and popped in a Feather---wow, night and day!! In sum, I would recommend this razor to anyone interested in starting out with DE shaving. Additionally, from my experience, I would recommend the Feather and/or Astra Platinum blades and stay clear of the Derbys.
