Product Description

Built using lessons learned from the decades spent manufacturing similar products and listening to customer opinions, the Merkur Vision 2000 Adjustable Safety Razor is one of the most accessible and advanced double-edge razors out there. Since both the angle and the exposure of the razor blade can be adjusted so as to meet the user’s needs, this razor can accommodate a much bigger range of users than comparable products. It helps that this razor is capable of using almost all double-edge razor blades of modern origin, ranging from Feather to the razor’s own manufacturer, Merkur. In light of information, both newcomers and old hands to safety razors might be interested to know that Fendrihan sells blade samplers to help them find their perfect razor blades. Bear in mind that this product requires an occasional dip in a cleaning agent to eliminate deposits that might obstruct its mechanism.

Based in a region famed for swordsmithing, Merkur has turned that experience to manufacturing superb razors and razor blades. Not only has it claimed a significant portion of the German market, but it has also built an international presence. In fact, most of Merkur’s products go to feed demand in countries other than Germany.

When I received my razor I must admit I was intimated by its size. I have been wet shaving for over 20 years and had no problems after 1st shave, indeed a great razor weight and balance ratio is perfect. My only disappointment is that the blade clearance on the silos is slightly different. This is not a defect according to Merkur. Drag will be slightly different on each side.

This is my favourite razor of all time. It is very well built and provides a shave that is surgically close. The adjustments offer the customer the opportunity to really get it right. I know some people have indicated that this razor is unreliable but I have not had one single problem with it in the two years I have used it. There are handy guides out there to help you fix it but I have not had to do a thing with it. I find its size and weight to be a real benefit as it makes shaving easier and gives the user great feedback. Worth every penny.

This razor has given me the closest shave I have ever had. WOW! The lowest setting shuts down the blade completely. I had to dial back to 'O' in 'visiOn' to get any kind of shave at all. I went down to the 'S' and found it too aggressive and finally settled on the second 'I' in 'visIon'. I didn't have to push at all, just guiding the razor was enough. Incredible shave. Having said that, I have to point out the cons. I had multiple issues with this razor when I first received it. The silo would not open smoothly all the way. I had to push it open manually. I think that the satin finish on the silo wings is a little rough and prevents them from operating smoothly. When the silo only opens halfway, this causes the retainer button at the bottom to fall off and the whole razor falls apart. Anyway, to make a long story short, I took the razor apart and found some adhesive reisidue on the shaft. (which I cleaned off) I wiggled the silo doors back and forth about 100 times each to smooth the finish and make them move easier. Put it all back together and it works beautifully. Too bad they don't take the time to adjust these things at the factory. It's really annoying to buy something and have to do my own quality control adjustments on it. One suggestion for Merkur if they are reading this....Put a heavier guage spring in this critter and it would probably overcome the extra friction caused by the finish and even the adhesive residue. I give this razor a 5 and give Merkur quality control a 2...
