Product Description
The Muhle R41 Classic Safety Razor with an open comb sports the newly redesigned 2011 Muhle Shaving head. The German-crafted design of this double-edge razor evokes early 20th century safety razors. A rather aggressive razor, especially recommended for those with a thick or coarse beard. When used properly, it will allow you to get a super close shave.
Craftsmanship, orientation to design and modern technologies are the trinity behind Muhle's success. Their products are made by people who love their work and have the courage to tread new paths, a philosophy first set by O.J. Muller in 1945, and which endures until today.
Shaving with a safety razor requires a little practice. Getting started will be easier if you follow these instructions:
- Moisten the beard area, preferably with warm water, and lather it thoroughly with a brush. The longer you lather the beard, the more easily and gently the hairs can be cut. If possible, use a highly effective moisturising shaving cream or soap as this will allow the blade to slide over the skin more easily.
- Make sure that the shaving head and handle are firmly attached to each other, but only tighten the screw to the extent that it can be unscrewed without too much effort. This ensures that the blade rests at the correct angle.
- Now begin with the shave. Hold the safety razor at an obtuse angle, approximately 30 degrees to the skin. Start with the cheeks and allow the razor to slide over the skin, applying gentle pressure.
-Always shave in the direction of the beard growth (with the grain). When shaving the neck, stretch the skin tight with your free hand.

Quite the fine razor, but as others have noted online, it's extremely aggressive. The head is lighter than I expected, but the open comb is nice, doing 80% of its work on the first pass. Problem is, that first pass is a rip even being cautious. Yet the second pass is as smooth as silk. The R41 really shines when it comes to edge work and shaving around the nose and lips. If you use it every other day or as an everyday razor, its aggression is reduced to assertiveness, and you may really like it.
