Product Description
The Muhle R41 Classic Safety Razor with an open comb sports the newly redesigned 2011 Muhle Shaving head. The German-crafted design of this double-edge razor evokes early 20th century safety razors. A rather aggressive razor, especially recommended for those with a thick or coarse beard. When used properly, it will allow you to get a super close shave.
Craftsmanship, orientation to design and modern technologies are the trinity behind Muhle's success. Their products are made by people who love their work and have the courage to tread new paths, a philosophy first set by O.J. Muller in 1945, and which endures until today.
Many of our first-time customers decide to purchase a razor blade sampler with their first DE razor as a practical way to determine which blade brand is best suited to their skin type, style of shaving and razor type, before making a purchase of a large quantity of blades.
Shaving with a safety razor requires a little practice. Getting started will be easier if you follow these instructions:
- Moisten the beard area, preferably with warm water, and lather it thoroughly with a brush. The longer you lather the beard, the more easily and gently the hairs can be cut. If possible, use a highly effective moisturising shaving cream or soap as this will allow the blade to slide over the skin more easily.
- Make sure that the shaving head and handle are firmly attached to each other, but only tighten the screw to the extent that it can be unscrewed without too much effort. This ensures that the blade rests at the correct angle.
- Now begin with the shave. Hold the safety razor at an obtuse angle, approximately 30 degrees to the skin. Start with the cheeks and allow the razor to slide over the skin, applying gentle pressure.
-Always shave in the direction of the beard growth (with the grain). When shaving the neck, stretch the skin tight with your free hand.

Ahhhh, the legendary R41. What can one say that has not already been said about this exquisite razor? Well, I can tell you that my experience has been positive. I have a medium beard and fairly sensitive skin, especially under the nose, the chin and neck. I am prone to ingrown hairs, so I avoid any product that causes them. Despite these challenges, the R41 suits me just fine. I have been DE shaving for many years, so my technique is well developed and I adapted to the R41's design within a few strokes using the Derby blade it came with, a Thater silvertip brush and Geo F. Trumper's Limes cream. The results were unparalleled. Each shave is as good as the last. 3 passes WTG, XTG and ATG produces a smoothness bordering on perfection. To avoid weepers and razor burn, I prep with hot towels for 5 minutes and don't over do it with the brush on the face, especially in between passes. I would also recommend shaving every second day with the R41, especially if you do a three pass shave. This razor shaves very close and may irritate your skin with daily use. That said, if used properly this beautifully crafted instrument will spoil you and no other razor will satisfy.

Quite the fine razor, but as others have noted online, it's extremely aggressive. The head is lighter than I expected, but the open comb is nice, doing 80% of its work on the first pass. Problem is, that first pass is a rip even being cautious. Yet the second pass is as smooth as silk. The R41 really shines when it comes to edge work and shaving around the nose and lips. If you use it every other day or as an everyday razor, its aggression is reduced to assertiveness, and you may really like it.
