  • Crafted using both time honored hands-on methods and the best modern technologies, the Vie-Long Horse Hair Shaving Brush is striking, wet-shaving tool. Contrast unbleached dark horse hair with a bright and warm ivory handle, this brush has an elegant aesthetic. Many wet shavers like the soft tips and strong backbone of horsehair, and this Spanish selection has a nice mix of 35 percent mane hair and 65 percent tail hair for both strength and softness.

In 1940 Vie-Long, S.L. began as a family business in Spain, specializing in the manufacture of shaving and makeup brushes. Today they combine modern technology and traditional handcrafting that results in prestigious products used locally and internationally.

Best of Both Worlds

I begin this review as is my custom, by thanking Fendrihan for its ample selection, reasonable prices, prompt and accurate order fulfillment, and superb customer service. I have been wet shaving for decades, and have used various makes and models of badger and boar brushes. Previous to this purchase, I purchased elsewhere two different Vie-Long horse hair shaving brushes, one of which was less expensive than the brush being reviewed and one of which was more expensive than the brush being reviewed. Their use was short-lived, and each were soon discarded. Their knots were too narrow, their backbone was minimal, and their hairs easily tangled. They were difficult to load with soap and were marginally adequate with cream. Swirling the lather to my face was out of the question, and painting the lather could be achieved only by flopping the unified mass of hair across my face. Once tangled, they were all but impossible to untangle. Adding to my disappointment was the immediate degradation to the Vie-Long Logo on the premium brush. I was impressed by Mark K.'s review, below, and noted his observation that the knot on this Vie-Long Horse Hair Shaving Brush was the thickest among those horse hair brushes offered by Fendrihan. After three separate, multi-pass shaves (Tabac shave soap, Cella shave soap, Geo F. Trumper shave cream), I fully endorse Mark K.'s review. This brush is a pleasant compromise between a quality badger hair brush and a quality boar bristle brush. The initial odor quickly dissipated after one application of shampoo and conditioner, followed by a couple of test bowl and face lathers. It has sufficient backbone to conveniently load a hard soap and is flexible enough to avoid over-loading a cream. The handle fit well in my medium-sized hand. The lather may be applied by swirling or by painting, with no fear of tangling in either case. Once fully loaded, sufficient lather is made to easily enable a three-pass shave and touch-up thereafter. Time will tell if the horse hairs are as gentle as silver tip badger, but even now they appear to be a tad more gentle than boar bristle. A lengthy post-shave ritual to restore the horse hairs to proper condition was unnecessary. Nonetheless, after thoroughly rinsing the loft under warm water and gently wiping the hairs against a cotton towel, I did comb through the hairs using the wide-gapped teeth of a plastic comb. And, after daily three shaves, the logo looks good as new. This brush is reasonably priced, performs well and is aesthetically pleasing. I am very well pleased with this purchase.

Vie-Long 12750 horse hair brush

This brush has the thickest knot of any model in the Vie-Long range (offered by Fendrihan) and is therefore quite full & 'bushy'. It generates a rich lather & holds it long enough for a second lathering-up after a first pass with the razor. It generates & holds lather much better than any of the half dozen boars' hair brushes I've used (Omega & Semogue) but not as well as a badger brush. It is also much softer than the boars' hair brushes but not as soft as a good badger brush. It does smell like a wet dog (a wet horse I guess) the first few times you use it but this odour disappears completely after about a week of daily use. (I recall some badger brushes that I've had in the past that smelled when they were new, especially the cheaper ones.) In general I would recommend this brush to anyone who doesn't want to blow $70-$150 on a good badger brush. Ideal for anyone new to wet shaving or on a tight budget. Note: I use this brush with Mitchell's Wool Fat Soap, Tabac Shaving Soap & l'Occitane Shaving Soap
