One of my worst purchases. Been shaving for 45 years and wanted to try something new. Read all of the positive reviews and thought, why not. First time, shaved 3 times trying to get a close even shave. No luck. Tried assortment of blades. No luck. Would have returned immediately BUT I three the box away and Fendrihan would not accept. Keep the box!!
I purchased this Merkur 34C HD to replace my Muhle R107 that my wife dropped on the bathroom ceramic floor and broke. The Muhle razor was a 3 pieces razor. The head on the Muhle is the same as on the Edwin Jagger x89 series-Both company shared the R&D for these). Very similar to the Fendrihan FEN-S6KS except the handle was white. That was a very nice razor but wanted to replace it with one that could take a hit if it happens again. This is why I decided to go for the Merkur 34C HD. The look of the Merkur is not as luxurious but is it a VERY good rasor for every day usage. I tried many different blades on it, Starting with the Derby, then Muhle, Merkur and finally the Astra Platinum (green package). It performed well with the Derby's but it performs even better with the Astra. since the Merkur separates in two parts it is very easy to clean. I use a toothbrush with a bit of toothpaste once a week to clean it at every blade change. On daily usage, I unscrew the knob slightly and run the head under hot tap water. This way, it clean any residue on the blade as well. For the quality of shave, the Merkur 34C is slightly more agressive than the Muhle/EdwinJager and I prefer that. I use one drop of shaving oil and rub it on wet hands then rub it on wet face. I bowl lather some NIVEA cream. I shave making 2 passes and a touch-up 3rd pass and get a Baby But Skin shave. Merkur 34C HD is a great performer! * the shaving oil I use is my own home-made one. 2 parts Grapeseeds oil 1 part Castor oil 1 part almond oil a few drops of lemon essential oil a few drops of peppermint essential oil a few drop of eucalyptus essential oil (essential oils are optional and are used as a fragrance)
Tried double edge's in my 20's and was not happy with them. Fifty some years late and I wonder why I ever quit using them. The answer is simple. Quality! Merkur razor and good blades made a big difference. Just as important for me was going to pre-shave oil and shaving soap. No more creams or jells from cans for me. A good way to give the pre shave oil a try before paying $6-12 /oz. try coconut oil first. The uses of coconut oil is endless. First time users should buy a blade sample pack.
love it, use it daily...
Great razor & good choice if you're planning on getting into wet shaving. Often compared to the Edwin Jagger DE89, which I also happen to own, I find that the Merkur provides a smoother & closer shave. Buy it, you will not regret it.
